With many new homeowners opting for spacious and spa like bathrooms, a small bathroom can feel quite limiting, especially if it’s the only bathroom in the house. And, while a smaller bathroom may indeed lack the space for certain luxurious amenities, it also provides the opportunity to have fun with pattern or color that may look too overwhelming in another (or larger) space of the house.
If you’re considering remodeling your bathroom space, consider these tips to help make your small space feel more luxurious.
Consider a low profile sink
If you’re really tight on space, a pedestal sink may still take up too much space. Consider a corner sink that can help open up floor space or a trough sink that can be wall mounted and provide space for storage underneath. Alternatively, add a ledge above the sink to hold essentials and free up floor space. If you do have room for a pedestal sink, try an oval sink as it will provide more counterspace than a square sink will.
Visually open the space
There are many ways to make a small space look and feel larger.
Install a glass shower door to open the room and allow you to see from one end of the room to the other.
Use an oversized mirror at the vanity to help the room look lighter and brighter, which in turn makes it look larger.
Pair an oversized mirror with lighter colors (wall paint, tile, vanity, etc.) and watch the room seemingly grow in size.
Big patterns
It may seem counterintuitive, but if lighter colors isn’t your thing, a smaller bathroom is also a place where using a bold color or pattern can have a lot of impact. Try a patterned floor with simple walls, or an accent wall with a bold color, dark color or patterned wall paper so the room doesn’t become too overwhelmed and busy by using pattern all over.
Shower
Smaller bathrooms may also mean smaller shower spaces. Add a shower niche for toiletries to free up floor space in the shower and make the items more easily accessible. Also, if you’re tiling the bathroom floor, consider using the same floor tiles in the shower to create the illusion of more space.
Go with a pocket door
A pocket door is one of the greatest space-saving tricks for smaller bathrooms as it frees up floor space, allowing for larger amenities or a different floor plan in the bathroom.
