We recently worked with a wonderful repeat client to finish the basement in their newly purchased home, a new construction luxury townhome with an unfinished basement. The space was quite large, approximately 1,100 square feet with 10-foot ceilings. The homeowners were interested in breaking it up to create a main area, storage/wine room, utility room and sump pump room.
Working with a completely unfinished space allows the freedom to design the space to fit the needs of the homeowners.
Main Area
In the main area, the homeowners are planning to include a television and seating area, bar area and small gym area. While the main area is one large room, the design for the completed space is quite cohesive.
To help prepare for the final design of this main area, we ran wiring for multimedia, added an HVAC “mini-split” system to ensure the space is a comfortable temperature year-round and added a floor outlet. We also adjusted the sprinkler system and painted the egress window to ensure it looked clean when the homeowners looked outside.
Throughout both the main area and the storage/wine area, we installed a drywall ceiling. While the original plan was for a drop ceiling, the homeowners switched gears and opted for a drywall ceiling during the process. Recessed lighting was installed with a dimmer throughout the entirety of the space.
We also used the same paint color and flooring through main area and storage/wine room. The homeowners, looking for a bright yet neutral color opted for Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray, which created such a refined look. In terms of the flooring, we installed SMARTCORE Ultra 8-Piece 5.91-in x 48.03-in Woodford Oak Locking Luxury Commercial/Residential Vinyl Plank from Lowes. The homeowners chose a vinyl plank flooring as it allows for easy cleanup.
Storage/Wine Room
This extra room located to the right of the stairs can be used for both storage and/or wine storage. As of now, the space is open for interpretation. The paint, flooring and ceiling details are the same as the main room, allowing the space to be cohesive throughout.
Stairs
Originally, the stairwell had solid walls on both sides into the basement. In order to open the space, we removed the wall facing into the main basement area and installed a new custom stairwell railing. We also refaced the steps with a new finish grade wood and custom stained the stair treads to match the flooring in the basement area.
This is not the first time we worked with these homeowners. We also worked in their old home to complete the basement, coincidentally. It is always such a pleasure working with repeat clients and helping their vision come to life throughout their home, or in this case, homes. Watching a space transform from unfinished to complete is satisfying for both us and the homeowner.
